Parliament recalled to pass hate speech, gun laws in response to Bondi attack

Federal MP Allegra Harcayıcı, whose electorate includes Bondi, called for anti-defamation laws to be included in today’s legislation.

“When we look at Bondi, we see that this is a crime of violent extremism, in this case violent Islamic extremism. How do we get to the bottom of stopping this?” Spending said on the ABC this morning.

“When hate preachers could call for things like a ‘final solution’ for Jews, which some people were calling for, and it wasn’t a crime under federal law, it was concerning, because we know that violence starts with hate, and hate starts with words.”

He said the spending bills were “flawed” but “strongly expected” they would both be passed today after meeting with the prime minister last night.

“I think it’s important for the parliament to come together today and pass some legislation, but honestly, there’s a long way to go to keep the Jewish community safe, to bring our country together and to repair what we’ve lost.”
