The Dallas Mavericks announced Tuesday that they have fired general manager Nico Harrison.
The team said Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi have been named co-general managers while the organization searches for a permanent replacement.
“This decision reflects our commitment to building a championship-quality organization that will serve our players, partners and most importantly, our fans,” Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont said in a statement. he said.
Harrison, 52, oversaw the stunning trade of superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers last season.
Ever since the embattled general manager traded the fan favorite for Anthony Davis, he’s been chanting “Fire Nico!” Slogans are shouted. It’s been one constant in the Mavericks’ home games.

Harrison had been the team’s general manager since June 2021 and had a 182-157 record over his four-plus years on the job. The team made it to the NBA Finals before falling to the Boston Celtics in 2023-2024.
After trading Doncic last season, the Mavericks fell out of the playoff picture and barely made it into the Play-In Tournament, where they were eliminated. After making the NBA Finals, they became the first team to miss the playoffs since 2019-2020.
The Mavericks unexpectedly won the NBA Draft Lottery to land the No. 1 overall pick, which they used on former Duke star Cooper Flagg. Although Flagg and Davis form a strong duo in the frontcourt, the Mavericks have struggled this season.

The Mavericks are 3-8 and sit just ahead of the New Orleans Pelicans in the Western Conference. The team took a double-digit lead over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night, and chants of “Fire Nico” grew louder as Mavericks fans’ lead disappeared in the 116-114 loss.
Following Monday’s loss, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd was asked if the chants calling for his position as general manager had affected team morale. “It’s noise, so speaking for them, I would say we kept playing throughout the game. On second thought, we put ourselves in a position to win tonight, but that’s a question you have to ask the players who played.”
