Mr Trump’s mother was born and raised on the Hebridean Isle of Lewis but emigrated to New York in 1930.

He added: ‘My wonderful mother, Mary MacLeod, was born in Stornoway in the Hebrides of Scotland. And they call it very serious Scotland, there’s no doubt about that.

‘In some places, “Was it really Scotland?” they say. The Hebrides are truly serious Scotland, that’s where they had the greatest warriors.

‘She came to America when she was 19, met my incredible father – we loved him so much – Fred, and they were married for 63 years.’

The president also praised the relationship between the US and the UK as having the ‘strongest and deepest roots’.

Despite recent tensions between Britain and the US, Mr Trump has spoken glowingly of ties between the two countries.

He declared: ‘In the centuries since our independence the Americans have had no closer friends than the British.’

And in a tribute to the ‘essence’ of the ‘special relationship’ after the Second World War, he said: ‘This understanding of our nation’s unique bond and its role in history is the essence of our special relationship, and we hope it will always remain so.’

In his speech, Mr Trump branded the US and UK ‘the two most exceptional countries the world has ever known’ and called on the countries to move forward ‘together… with even stronger resolve’.

Mr Trump concluded: ‘Your Majesty, thank you once again for this important visit. “We were very honored.”

While the President and King held private talks in the Oval Office, Camilla and Melania joined a group of American students at the White House tennis pavilion for an “intercultural” engagement showcasing technology training in which students learn about American history and “special relations with the United Kingdom” using virtual reality headsets and AI-powered glasses.

The session showcased Mrs. Trump’s ‘Promoting the Future Together’ initiative, which she launched last year with a group that included state champions from the Presidential Artificial Intelligence Challenge.

Melania, who tried the special glasses offered to her by one of the students, stated that their effects were ‘incredible’.
