The Holiday inspires Gen Zs to home-swap and find love

Nearly 20 years after The Holiday was first released in cinemas, young Brits are bringing the film’s iconic festival extravaganza to life by switching homes in search of new experiences and even romance.

There’s been a huge increase in the number of millennials and Gen Z Brits inspired by the heartwarming transatlantic exchange between Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz) and Iris Simpkins (Kate Winslet), according to global house flipping platform Kindred.

New research from the company found that 44 percent of millennials and Gen Z said the movie inspired them to move house, while 27 percent of Gen Z admitted they had already tried it.

The houses featured in The Holiday have topped the list of movie houses where Brits most want to stay, ahead of classics such as Home Alone and The Summer I Turned Pretty.

The holiday rush coincides with a 124 per cent year-on-year increase in the number of UK Kindred members planning a trip in December and an 85 per cent increase in the number heading to Los Angeles; This reflects the film’s change from California to the Cotswolds.

Justine Palefsky, CEO of Kindred, said: “The magic of vacation is not just escape, but the feeling of belonging. When you move house, you step into someone else’s everyday world. Travel becomes richer, more human; it allows you to discover new versions of yourself.”

More than one in ten Britons (11 per cent) say they are more open to finding love on holiday – rising to 20 per cent among Gen Z – showing that the Holiday spirit is alive and well.
