The Odyssey Becomes Christopher Nolan’s Biggest Global Opener

Los Angeles: Filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s latest film ‘The Odyssey’ has had an epic start at the box office. The action-adventure film, which stars stars like Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya and Anne Hathaway, grossed US$264.1 million over the weekend, including US$139.6 million worldwide and US$124.5 million domestically, Variety reported. The collections mark a big start for an R-rated movie that clocks in at nearly three hours and isn’t even part of a larger franchise. ‘Odyssey’ is adapted from Homer’s nearly 3000-year-old epic poem.

This is already Nolan’s biggest opening worldwide, surpassing his previous albums ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ with $249 million and ‘The Dark Knight’ with $198 million.

Additionally, the film is the third biggest opening of the year after ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ ($372.5 million) and ‘Toy Story 5’ ($312 million). In India, the film made a solid jump in collections on Saturday, taking its two-day total to over Rs 36 billion, according to estimates. The epic fantasy action movie recorded “phenomenal growth” on Friday with packed shows in many key markets, according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

The film collected Rs 16.04 crore on Friday and added Rs 20.68 crore on Saturday, taking the total India net collection across all versions to Rs 36.72 crore. He said he is expected to perform even better on Sunday. Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, ‘Odyssey’ follows Odysseus, who faces dangerous creatures and formidable challenges during his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War. In addition to its action and adventure, the story also focuses on the bond between Odysseus, played by Anne Hathaway, and his wife Penelope. ‘The Odyssey’ is Nolan’s first feature film after the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer and was released in theaters on July 17.
