The places where it’s cheaper to holiday this summer

Flora Badger is taking three young girls on their first holiday abroad this summer.

He contacted BBC Your Voice to share his frustration at watching holiday prices fluctuate.

Flora said she first considered booking in April to avoid the expensive summer months, but postponed it due to the situation in the Middle East and fear of being stuck abroad.

He made a reservation to go to the Spanish island of Lanzarote in September.

“Price was a huge issue,” he says. “It is very frustrating that it increases so much during school holidays.

“They need a treat at the end of the day, that’s what we’re saving for, they’re looking forward to it, so we plan on going.”

Skyrocketing price increases for European holidays may have slowed but are still on the rise, according to TravelSupermarket data.

The average cost of a seven-night all-inclusive family stay in Spain this August has risen by 4% to £155 per person. While prices in Portugal increased by 3%, prices in Greece increased by 5%.

It depends on what day of the week you travel, but a family of four could pay up to £160 extra to go to Spain this year for seven nights compared to last, bringing the total up to £4,340.

The figures are based on online searches on TravelSupermarket from 18 April to 17 June for all-inclusive, seven-night family holidays in August 2025 and 2026.

While this snapshot of data reveals a general trend, costs will vary depending on exactly where a family goes and when they book.

One thing Flora has been able to benefit from is that the cost of renting a car in the most sought-after destinations has dropped compared to last year.
