The real reason a 4-day workweek makes people happier in their jobs

It is not surprising that workers support the transportation of a four -day working week.

In the last five years, hundreds of companies have been a pilot for a four -day 32 -hour working week without paying payment to 8,700 workers around the world. People experienced less burnout, stress and anxiety and better mental and physical health. Employees rated their work-life balances higher and even increased work profits.

Juliet Schor, the author, economist, sociologist and chief researcher of 4 -day weekly experiments, has two important factors for the support of workers’ happiness.

First, of course, people have more time for their families, friends, sleep, hobbies, health and communities, Schor says “four days a week” in his last book.

However, the second factor is that the workers are happier even in hours. Simply put, the four -day week makes people feel much more effective at work, which makes them happy in general.

‘People feel much better’

The trial participants reported that they were more productive than ever after a shortened week. When Schor faced the task of performing their usual work in a shorter time, workers and teams found ways to cut off their busy jobs, facilitate processes, and determine which work is actually the most important work.

Although Schor said that some of them felt more stress while trying to block everything, although some of them were exceptions.

Beyond maintaining productivity, “people feel much better,” says Schor, Make to CNBC. “They feel above their work and their lives and they are not stressful. They feel healed when they come to work on Monday morning. They feel more willing to do business. They feel like they can.”

When the workers feel good in their work, they generally feel good and they are poured into their personal lives.

“The impact of productivity, which has a great positive impact on its general welfare,” they feel very good about business quality, “Schor says.

A new contract between bosses and workers

The four -day working week can make people feel better about their work because it points to a new contract between themselves and their employers.

Typical five days, 40 hours of working week Since the 1940s, the national standard according to laws. When companies bring a shorter working week without wage deduction, flexibility can be seen as an exclusive benefit or reward.

Schor points out that management is willing to give up some control on how people configure their time, and Schor is, especially if some of the target is to openly improve employee welfare.

Movement can strengthen teams when colleagues come together to work smarter in a shorter time.

Four -day week “super motivates to implement everyone [process] Jon Leland, who had previously helped Kickstarter through a four -day working week pilot.

“This is not only for yourself to get these productivity gains for yourself, because you do it for everyone around you,” Leland told Schor in his book Laland.

“This accountability against his colleagues is an important part of what people want to make extra efforts to find efficiency, escape and do hard work,” Schor said. “They are developing more team spirit.”
