The schools starting late after England v Mexico ‘to help parents’
Alistair Wilson, assistant headteacher at Whipton Barton Federation primary school in Exeter, Devon, will also open at the normal time but will have a uniform-free day, showing highlights of the match in classrooms with football-themed activities following breakfast.
“It will be a great way to celebrate the day, the World Cup excitement has definitely gotten them through,” says Wilson.
Even in schools that open late, teachers advise students to get some sleep.
Oaks Park High School, in Carshalton, south London, which will open at 9.45am, said in a letter to parents that pupils were “strongly” encouraged to get some sleep before the game to avoid being “overly tired”.
Some on social media, including teacher and podcaster Lee Parkinson, called for “common sense” leniency on attendance figures on Monday.
Others point out that many schools across the country have already been closed for several days during last week’s heatwave, leading to disruptions in education.
When Kelly Wall returned to Wolverhampton, she noticed a lot of positive talk at the school gates.
She says she can understand the point of view of anyone who disagrees, but adds: “It’s so rare that we get to have these special moments with our kids because our lives are always so busy.
“Really let the kids participate, watch the game and spend some time with their families.”
