The second lady does not have a background in national security law, but a White House chronicler says her expertise was called on anyway.

Second Lady Usha Vance was a secret adviser on this year’s high-risk mining deal with Ukraine, White House historian Jonathan Karl claims in his upcoming book. The question of whether the February deal was legally reviewed arose in talks between President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance. Karl writes that he stepped in to offer legal expertise to the Vice President’s wife at the time. “I could have Usha take a look,” Vance said, according to Politico, which quoted an excerpt from Karl’s book.
