MSNBC panel debates if Katie Porter backlash shows double standard for women

A panel on MSNBC’s “Chris Jansing Reports” on Thursday discussed whether the recent backlash against California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter was due to a “double standard” for women in politics.
On Wednesday, Politico reported that Porter told a staff member to “get the f—— off my check!” He posted an unseen clip from 2021 that shows him shouting. during a video interview.
Jansing said of the clip, “Look, it’s disturbing to watch, just like the first one.” “But my question is: Would the reaction be different if the candidate were male? Is there still a double standard for women in politics, or is this just bad?”

Former Lincoln Project consultant Tara Setmayer said the clip was “bad across the board” but said there were “definitely” double standards for women in politics.
“All you have to do is look at how Hillary Clinton was treated when she was running for president against Donald Trump,” Setmayer said. he said. “Look at how Kamala Harris was treated last year against Donald Trump. Look at how the media treated people in the administration like Stephen Miller, who could throw a tantrum on TV, or Donald Trump, who constantly threatened people, or Tom Homan, the ICE czar, the border czar, and the bad things he said. Look at the list of guys who behaved badly but were apparently rewarded for it with more power.”

He added: “So there’s clearly a double standard in the way society looks at how women behave towards men and what’s considered good and bad behavior. And that shouldn’t be the case. But in this case, Katie Porter, it’s just awful.”
Fox News Digital has reached out to Porter’s campaign for comment.

Porter has come under criticism in the past few days after clips of past interviews went viral. A clip from Tuesday night drew backlash from both liberal and conservative journalists after it showed Porter threatening to end her interview with CBS California’s Julie Watts.

In the clip, Porter became visibly impatient with Watts’ pursuits and even tried to leave in frustration at one point, calling his interviewer “argumentative.” Porter told Watts that he “didn’t want to have an unhappy experience” with her and that he “didn’t want all of this to happen on camera.”
