Off-duty Texas deputy shoots man allegedly trying to enter car with child

A fatal shooting occurred in Texas on Friday when an off-duty Harris County deputy opened fire on a man who was allegedly trying to get into his car while his young child sat a few feet away.
The incident happened around 2:45 p.m. Friday in Atascocita, about 20 miles northeast of downtown Houston, after an off-duty police officer called 911 and said someone was at gunpoint, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
Major Ben Katrib said the sheriff’s deputy put his child in his car seat, and then an unidentified man, identified as Darrius Williams, 27, tried to get into his car.

The deputy was heard giving Williams multiple verbal commands, but he allegedly ignored the warnings and opened the passenger door of the deputy’s car.
Katrib said the deputy opened fire, hitting Williams multiple times.
First responders provided aid, but Williams was later pronounced dead at a hospital in Houston, FOX 26 reports. reported.

The deputy and his child, whose identities have not been publicly released, are OK, officials said.
It’s unclear whether Williams had any weapons during the alleged attack or how many times he was shot, according to the report.
Williams’ mother, Tieneeshia, said her son was released from prison Thursday night and is struggling with mental health issues.

“Last night they caught him for going into oncoming traffic and they ran his name. So there was a decision not to show up in the last episode,” Tieneeshia Williams said. “The officer called me while he was at the scene and asked a bunch of questions. I said, ‘Ma’am, why don’t you take him to the psychiatric ward? He’s walking into traffic.’ He said, ‘Oh no, we’re going to deal with this warrant, he’s going to jail.'”
Sources told FOX 26 Ring camera footage may have captured the incident.

According to the report, the sheriff’s office and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office launched separate investigations into the incident.
Once the investigation is concluded, the prosecutor’s office will present the findings to a grand jury to decide whether to file criminal charges.
