‘This Is the People’s House!’ ABC’s Mary Bruce Spars With Karoline Leavitt Over East Wing Demolition for Trump Ballroom

ABC’s mary bruce Argued with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt On the demolition of the East Wing of the White House for the Presidency Donald Trump’s new ball-room on Thursday.
Leavitt took a series of questions about the construction project during Thursday’s briefing, including several from Bruce:
BRUCE: Two quick construction questions if I can. You mentioned that any construction project comes with changes. The president had initially said that this project would not interfere with or touch the existing structure. He now realizes that in order to do this properly, the East Wing must be demolished. This is the people’s home. Why not inform the public of this change and that it has been determined that the East Wing should be demolished?
LEAVITT: Look, again, with every construction project there are changes, and we’ve kept you all informed. We keep you informed about this project. We showed you the renders. And if you look at the images, it’s very clear that the East Wing will be modernized. In fact, I first said this in the briefing where we introduced this plan to all of you and the public. East-
BRUCE: But modernizing and demolishing are two different things.
LEAVITT: Yes, the president again… The plans changed when the president heard recommendations from architects and construction companies that this first phase, which we’re in now, is necessary for this East Wing to remain modern and beautiful for many years to come, to be a truly strong and stable structure. The President also wants to do this next to the people’s homes. And that’s exactly what he does. As I said, when it is completed, it will be much more stable, stronger, safer and more beautiful than ever.
BRUCE: Where will they be? Will the First Lady’s offices, the offices of the Social Secretariat in the east, return to their former locations?
LEAVITT: Yes.
