This is world’s longest railway platform, longer than many Olympic tracks, not in China, Singapore, US, or Japan, it’s located in…

India’s rail network ranges from the world’s longest railway platform at Hubballi Junction in Karnataka (1,507 metres) to India’s smallest (200 metres) at Banspani Railway Station. Both stations play important roles in connectivity, reflecting India’s diverse railway infrastructure.

Indian Railways is one of the largest railway networks in the world, with more than 7,461 railway stations spread across the country. These stations serve millions of passengers every day, making Indian Railways an integral part of the country’s transportation system. Among the many stations, there are two notable extremes: India’s longest railway platform and the smallest railway station in the country. Let’s take a closer look at these two unique stations.

Hubballi Junction: The world’s longest railway platform

Located in Hubballi, a major city of Karnataka, Hubballi Junction hosts the world’s longest railway platform. The platform is an impressive 1,507 meters (approximately 4,944 feet) long, making it into the Guinness World Records as the longest railway platform in the world.

The station serves as the headquarters of the South Western Railway region and is a vital transport hub in southern India. It connects many major cities such as Bengaluru, Hosapete, Vasco-da-Gama and Belagavi, facilitating seamless travel for passengers and cargo. The record-breaking platform allows multiple trains to be accommodated simultaneously, significantly reducing traffic congestion and overcrowding, a common problem at many busy train stations.

A major modernization project was implemented at Hubballi Junction and was completed in March 2023. This expansion not only earned the station a Guinness World Record, but also increased its operational efficiency, allowing the station to accommodate increased passenger traffic. Today the station plays a crucial role in connecting the region, supporting both passenger trains and freight services and contributing to the economic growth of the region.

Banspani Railway Station: India’s smallest railway station

At the other end of the spectrum is Banspani Railway Station in Keonjhar, Odisha, which holds the title of India’s smallest railway station. With a length of just 200 meters (some sources report 140 metres), Banspani is India’s shortest platform.

This small station serves the town of Banspani and its surroundings. Despite its size, Banspani plays a crucial role in connecting the local community to India’s larger railway network. The station operates a single platform and mainly serves regional and local train services, providing the people of Banspani with access to a wider range of transport options.

Although modest in size, Banspani Railway Station contributes significantly to the connectivity of the state of Odisha, known for its natural beauty and rich culture. This stands as an example of how even smaller stations can have an important role in the larger framework of Indian Railways.

A web of opposites

These two stations, Hubballi Junction and Banspani Railway Station, are fascinating examples of the excesses in the Indian railway network. On one hand, Hubballi Junction represents India’s infrastructural development and has one of the most impressive railway platforms worldwide. Banspani Railway Station, on the other hand, demonstrates the importance of smaller regional stations helping to connect rural communities to the wider railway network.

Indian Railways continues to evolve by meeting the needs of millions across the country. Whether record-breaking platforms or small rural stations, each station plays a unique role in the comprehensive railway system and contributes to the seamless transport network that is vital to India’s economy and development.
