This man started growing cluster beans after losing faith in market vegetables. Today, he grows 150 varieties at home

What started as a simple attempt to grow better quality bunch beans at home has grown into a thriving 1,500-square-foot garden filled with vegetables, fruits and herbs. Along the way, he discovered that cluster beans are one of the easiest vegetables for beginners to grow.

His gardening journey began because he and his mother were unhappy with the vegetables available in local markets. “The quality of vegetables in the market is not good,” The Better India quoted him as saying.
Determined to find a better alternative, Vijay planted cluster beans at his home in 2017. The results exceeded their expectations. The vegetables were fresher, healthier and tastier than anything he bought at the market.

Encouraged by success, he expanded his kitchen garden to include spinach, okra, peppers and many other crops. During the lockdown, she devoted even more time to learning about gardening and trying different growing techniques through social media.
Today, there are more than 150 plant varieties in his garden. Although he grows everything from cauliflower to pomegranates, bunch beans remain one of his top tips for new gardeners.
Here are seven tips that Vijay follows to grow healthy bunch beans at home.
1. Plant Cluster Beans in the Right Season
According to Vijay, timing is one of the most important factors of success.
Cluster beans thrive in hot, humid weather and do particularly well during the monsoon season in many parts of India. He advises beginners to focus on seasonal vegetables rather than forcing plants to grow outside of their natural growing conditions.
When planted in the right season, cluster bean seeds germinate quickly and require little effort to establish.
2. Prepare Healthy Soil Before Planting
A healthy harvest starts with healthy soil.
Vijay prefers to use a simple growing medium made from garden soil mixed with cow dung manure or coco peat. This combination helps retain moisture while providing nutrients that support strong plant growth.
Good soil preparation also reduces the chance of problems later in the growing cycle and gives seedlings a stronger foundation.
3. Choose Deep Pots with Proper Drainage
One of the biggest lessons Vijay has learned is that plants don’t care about fancy pots.
Over the years, he has transformed old barrels, damaged plastic containers, discarded tires and even homemade cement planters into growing grounds.
He says the most important thing for cluster beans is depth and drainage. The roots need enough space to develop and excess water should be able to drain out easily.
Whether you have a balcony, terrace or small garden, a deep grow bag or container can come in handy effectively.
4. Water Regularly During Early Growth
Proper watering plays an important role in the early stages of growth.
Although Vijay now uses a drip irrigation system in his garden, he believes that a simple watering can is more than enough for home gardeners.
The goal is to keep the soil consistently moist without waterlogging. Too much standing water around the roots can damage the plant.
During rainy periods or very humid weather, the need for irrigation may decrease depending on natural rainfall and soil conditions.
5. Provide Plenty of Sunlight
Cluster beans love sunlight.
Although they thrive in humid weather, they require several hours of direct sunlight each day to achieve healthy growth and abundant yields.
Balconies, terraces, rooftops and gardens with good sunlight are ideal places.
Adequate sunlight encourages flowering, which ultimately leads to more pods for harvest. Plants grown in heavy shade generally produce fewer beans.
6. Spend a Few Minutes Every Day Checking on Your Plants
One simple habit has helped Vijay maintain a productive garden over the years: regular monitoring.
He spends a few minutes each day inspecting his plants, removing dry leaves, checking for signs of stress and doing light pruning when necessary.
“Vegetable plants need pruning from time to time. Watering the plants is equally important for their healthy growth,” he says.
These small daily tasks may seem insignificant, but they can help identify and solve problems before they affect the harvest.
7. Harvest Broad Beans While They Are Young and Tender
Timing of harvest can make a big difference in flavor.
Vijay recommends picking cluster beans while their pods are still young and soft. At this stage they are more enjoyable to eat and have a better texture.
Regular harvesting also encourages the plant to continue producing fresh pods over a longer period of time, providing a steady supply to the kitchen.
From a Few Seeds to a Growing Garden
For Vijay Sharma, gardening has become much more than just growing vegetables.
What started as an effort to avoid low-quality products has turned into a rewarding lifestyle. His home garden now provides fresh food, reduces dependence on market vegetables, and provides a sense of peace and satisfaction every day.
His journey also highlights an important lesson for aspiring gardeners: Sometimes all it takes to grow something remarkable is a handful of seeds, a sunny corner, and a little consistency.
In Vijay’s case, it all started with a bunch of beans.
