Thousands flock to vantage points; Heavy police presence expected
Thousands of people lined up to secure viewing spots for New Year’s Eve fireworks in Sydney this morning.
The line of people waiting to enter the viewing area at Miss Macquaries Point stretched for more than a kilometer along The Domain.
Groups of friends gathered in the row could be seen sleeping, playing card games, listening to music, reading, sketching and eating to pass the time.
Many had built makeshift sleeping areas with camp chairs, blankets, sleeping bags, pillows and even tarps to rest during the long wait.
The first camper in line, 24-year-old Soren Chen, arrived at the queue at 10 a.m. yesterday morning.
Chen is from Taiwan and is visiting Sydney for the first time. He and his friends camped in line overnight to secure their spots.
“They are the most famous and best fireworks in the world,” Chen said. “We’ve never seen this before, only on TV.”
German and Austrian tourists Jana Bebek and Helen Ratzberger met in the queue early on Wednesday morning and became friends. They will see the fireworks display for the first time.
