Powerful microburst strikes Gold Coast, causing tower crane collapse and power outages

A sudden and powerful microburst hit Southport on Thursday afternoon, causing serious damage, including the partial collapse of a tower crane and knocking out several power lines.
Emergency services were called to the Gold Coast Highway at around 3.15pm following reports of damage.

Police declared an emergency under the Public Safety Protection Act at 3.45pm, creating an exclusion zone on the Gold Coast Highway, North St, stretching from Loders Creek to Broadwater.
“The public is advised to avoid the area and residents within the exclusion zone to remain indoors unless advised to do so by police,” a police spokesman said.
“No further information available at this time.”

Higgins Storm Chasing shared images from her followers showing the devastation.
“Some serious damage has been reported in Southport following the partial collapse of a tower crane after a very powerful microburst affected the area this afternoon,” they said on social media.
“The immediate area is closed as emergency crews are currently on scene.”
Labrador resident Liz Freeman said the storm was “very fast but very violent.”
“He threw our heavy furniture around the balcony as if it were made of paper, which broke with half a crane at the end of our street, showing just how strong the wind was,” Ms Freeman said.

The microburst also disrupted public transport, and Translink reported that tram services were affected by downed power lines.
“Trams running in both directions between Southport and Gold Coast University Hospital were stopped due to a fallen tree on power lines,” TransLink said in a statement.
“There are delays of up to 30 minutes. Buses are being arranged to get you moving again. To find alternative travel options, visit the trip planner and deselect ‘tram’ under advanced options.”
