Three rescued after 20-tonne boat carrying diesel, hydraulic oil wrecked in waters of Cook Island, off NSW Tweed Coast

Three people have been rescued after a 20-tonne boat broke away from its anchorage and became wrecked off the northern NSW coast.

NSW Maritime said in a statement that they were being monitored after the wooden-hulled ship broke away from its anchorage on Cook Island’s west coast, off the Tweed Coast, at around 8pm on Saturday.

The ship has diesel and hydraulic oil and its hull is punctured but intact.

“The vessel is currently in a reef and is on the eastern side of the island in very turbulent waters,” a NSW Maritime spokesman said on Sunday.

“Due to current conditions and location, NSW Maritime personnel are unable to access or recover the vessel.”

Upon notification of the incident, 3 people on the ship were rescued.

NSW Maritime said there was no evidence of pollution in the area but it would continue to monitor the ship day and night.

More to come.
