Three-year-old British boy drowns in swimming pool a day after arriving at Costa del Sol holiday home with his parents

A three-year-old British boy died after falling into the swimming pool at the holiday home where he was staying with his family near the Costa del Sol.

The alarm was raised at around 8.30am this morning at a rural property in the village of Periana in La Axarquia, north-east of Malaga.

Police and paramedics rushed to the rural home and a helicopter was also mobilized as part of the emergency response.

But there was nothing they could do to save the teenager’s life and tragically he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation has been launched by the Civil Guard, but well-placed sources say there is nothing to indicate any wrongdoing at this stage.

One of them said: ‘Investigators are still waiting for autopsy results, but this appears to be a tragic accident.’

In its statement and direct message to the boy’s parents, Periana Municipality said: ‘Today is an extremely sad day for our town.

‘On behalf of the Periana Municipal Council, we express our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased child.

The alarm was raised at a rural property in the village of Periana (pictured) in La Axarquia on the Costa del Sol at around 8.30am this morning.

‘There are no words that can ease this much pain, but we want to convey to you all our love, support and solidarity at this difficult time.

‘All Periana share your sorrow and stand with you in your grief at such a painful and unfair loss.

Mayor Meritxell Vizueta said she went to the property with a council member to reassure the family.

Local news said the young boy was the holiday couple’s only child who was left devastated by their painful loss.

Someone said that the English family had only arrived at the farmhouse yesterday.

A spokesman for the regional government-run emergency response coordination center said: ‘A three-year-old child died this morning after falling into a swimming pool at a farmhouse in Periana, in Malaga province.

‘We received a distress call at 8.30am that a child had fallen into the pool.

‘061 The Center for Health Emergency (CES) was quickly alerted and a medical helicopter, Civil Security and Local Police were dispatched.

‘Despite all the efforts of the emergency services, nothing could be done to save the child’s life. ‘The circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown.’

The Civil Guard, the police force investigating the incident, could not be reached over lunch today in Spain for comment or to confirm where the teenager came from.

Although initial findings indicate accidental death, autopsy results will officially determine the cause of death.

The child’s body is planned to be transferred to the Forensic Medicine Institute in the city of Malaga.

Tragically, this is the third drowning death in Malaga in just a week.

The previous case was a double tragedy on the coast of Malaga on June 12.

Two elderly people were found dead on a beach in Torrox. The man was 80 years old and the woman was 75 years old.
