‘Together as One,’ Bengaluru Torpedoes’ Unity Powers Them to First-ever PVL Crown

Hyderabad: Bengaluru Torpedoes etched their name in history on Sunday and clinched the first Scapia-backed RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League title with a commanding victory over Mumbai Meteors in the Season 4 final. It was a night of pure dominance and emotion, where the Torpedoes came out on top after years of near misses, showcasing teamwork, belief and the relentless pursuit of perfection.
Head Coach David Lee, a two-time Olympic medalist, praised the team’s improvement and heart after the historic win: “This team has been on top for several seasons and we have finally gotten over the hump. We outplayed them with serve, passing and sheer heart. The experience of playing in this final is huge for my men and the entire season has been defined by their blend of talent with efficiency to become the new champions of Indian volleyball.”
The victory was the culmination of a season defined by adaptability, resilience and chemistry on and off the field. The Torpedoes overcame every challenge thrown their way, including the absence of their captain Matt West in the semi-finals, to come out on top when it mattered most. Despite this defeat, the team showed remarkable composure and unity as they pulled together to secure their place in the grand final.
Against the formidable Mumbai Meteors, who have lost just one game all season, Bengaluru produced a performance that blended talent and discipline and was a perfect expression of their evolution throughout the campaign.
Among the standout players of the season, the brightest was Joel Benjamin. The 22-year-old sensational football player completed his first season by being selected as both the Most Valuable Player of the Season and the Best Offensive Player; which was a testament to his meteoric rise and influence. His attacking power and consistency made him a nightmare for defenders throughout the tournament, and his composure in the final reflected the maturity of a seasoned professional.
Reflecting on his journey, Joel said: “A few years ago I dreamed of playing in the Prime Volleyball League. I’m very grateful for that. I’m happy to help the team win the season. We worked together, but we didn’t just play for the team. There were a lot of people working behind the scenes… Everyone was working hard off the court.”
But this championship was truly a collective victory. TR Sethu, one of Bengaluru’s most consistent performers, was awarded the Best Host of the Season; His precision and aggression on the line set the tone at critical moments. Middle blockers Mujeeb and Jishnu were tremendous defensively, controlling the net and neutralizing opposition attacks with impeccable timing and awareness.
American attacker Jalen Penrose displayed momentum-changing surges throughout the play-offs, bringing his signature power and intensity, while compatriot and Captain Matt West returned to lead the team in the final. Meanwhile, libero Midhun anchored the backline with calm confidence, his defensive reading and quick reflexes saving key points at the most crucial moments.
From starting the season with tough struggles to finishing as champions, the Torpedoes’ journey progressed with faith, brotherhood and the hunger to finally lift the cup. As the confetti settled in Hyderabad, one thing was clear: the Bengaluru Torpedoes not only conquered Season 4 but also established themselves as the new standard bearers of Indian volleyball.
