‘Took a little bit of time to compute’: Man reveals he mistook his $40 million Powerball win for just $40,000

The $40 million Powerball winner, who mistakenly believed he had won just $40,000, recalled the life-changing phone call he didn’t answer.

The man from Castle Hill in NSW was summoned to a rugby match featuring his beloved Manly Sea Eagles when he received a call from an unknown phone number.

“When the phone started ringing, I thought it was random and didn’t answer it,” he said.

A text message from Lott revealed he had won the raffle, but it took a while for the size of the sum to sink in.

The winning market purchased the PowerHit entry via The Lott app.

The winning numbers in Thursday night’s 1561 Powerball draw were 27, 13, 15, 19, 14, 3 and 7.

The Powerball number was 18.

“At first I thought I won $40,000. It actually took a while to calculate,” the man said.

“Then I realized it was $40 million.

“This is pretty surreal. I’m in shock!”

“I’ve never won anything! But I must admit, when I put in this ticket this afternoon, I thought I might win.”

When the man told his wife about his earnings, she screamed with joy.

“We often joke about winning. We always talk about how we’ll spend it if we win, but then we think we’ll never win.” said the man.

The moneyed couple is now considering buying a few new homes and cars before getting off their feet and retiring early.

The Lott’s first division winning tally stands at 331 so far this financial year; this included 102 wins by NSW Lotteries customers.
