Top points of PM Modis meeting with Malaysian counterpoints

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. Various Memorandums of Understanding were exchanged during the talks as both leaders sought to strengthen cultural, economic and strategic ties.

Focus on Tamil language

In his joint press statement with Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the wider presence of Tamil in Malaysia’s education, media and cultural life, reflecting the strong people-to-people ties between both countries.

Prime Minister Modi said, “The common love for the Tamil language binds India and Malaysia together. The strong and vibrant presence of the Tamil language in Malaysia is evident in education, media and cultural life. I am confident that with today’s audiovisual agreement, films and music, especially Tamil films, will bring our hearts closer.”

He underlined the strong cultural and educational ties between the two countries, specifically touching on the presence of the Tamil language in Malaysia. He noted that the audiovisual agreement signed today will encourage further exchanges in film and music, with a particular emphasis on Tamil cinema.

Great importance is given to maritime security, intelligence sharing and defense

After the delegation level talks, Prime Minister Modi said that the two countries will jointly strengthen the security sector.

Prime Minister Modi said, “We will strengthen cooperation in the security sector in the areas of counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing and maritime security. We will also make defense cooperation more comprehensive.”

He also said that the partnership will further strengthen in emerging and critical areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, healthcare and food safety.

He also stated that bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, infrastructure, production and digital economy is gradually expanding.

No double standards on terrorism

Prime Minister Modi said that India’s stance against terrorism is firm, leaving no room for double standards or compromise, and both countries will work jointly against terrorism.

Underlining the countries’ commitment to cooperation in the fight against terrorism, Prime Minister Modi said, “Our message on terrorism is very clear, no double standards, no compromise.”

Six MoUs, four important documents exchanged

The two sides exchanged six memorandums of understanding covering a wide range of sectors. This includes audiovisual co-production, Disaster management collaboration
,Anti-corruption, United Nations peacekeeping, Semiconductor cooperation. The two leaders also witnessed the exchange of notes and documents between India and Malaysia, which included a memorandum of understanding on social security for Indian citizens in Malaysia, cooperation on vocational education and training, exchange of notes on security cooperation and exchange of notes on cooperation in the field of health.

The agreements aim to strengthen cooperation in new technologies, governance, public welfare and regional security, officials said.

Education, currency and trade are on the agenda

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised India’s economic growth and emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation beyond the current level of trade.

“India is growing rapidly and this means a phenomenal rise in the international economic trade scene and therefore, in the ASEAN context, Malaysia will definitely benefit greatly if we can get more avenues and opportunities to cooperate with India to go beyond the $18.59 billion we achieved in 2025.” he said.

Anwar also welcomed the move to use local currencies to the widest possible extent in bilateral transactions, calling it a “remarkable achievement”.

“Under the premiership of my good friend Prime Minister Modi, you have seen magnificent recognition of India’s centers of excellence in education. We would definitely look into increasing the number of students in various disciplines to study in India,” Anwar said. he said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi also touched upon various youth-focused initiatives such as university exchange programmes, skill development efforts and support to start-ups.

Prime Minister Modi was given a ‘Guard of Honour’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was officially welcomed and accorded with the Guard of Honour, upon his arrival in Malaysia.

Initially, Prime Minister Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held a special bilateral meeting and later on Sunday, delegation-level talks were held between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi also emphasized that India and Malaysia share a special bond as maritime neighbours, the two countries have strong people-to-people ties and the presence of Indian diaspora in Malaysia.

Prime Minister Modi also said that India is committed to ASEAN centrality and congratulated Malaysia on its ASEAN chairmanship.
