Toronto Tempo look to use home court edge against Chicago Sky in battle of flawed WNBA rosters

It’s a bit of a sad day. We don’t have an NHL or NBA Playoff game to enjoy tonight. The Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights played last night, and there was an extra travel day for the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks, who play Game 3 tomorrow.

That leaves us with baseball and women’s basketball, but that’s not a complaint. These bets are cashed out in the same way as other bets.

The Chicago Sky were just 4-6 on the season and managed to get a win by beating the Connecticut Sun on Friday night. Sky are universally regarded as one of the worst managed teams in the sport, but I’ll give them some credit for at least fielding some solid experienced players in the team. They added players like Skylar Diggins, who led them in points and assists. Natasha Cloud provides solid defense and Rickea Jackson was playing very well before his injury.

Still, you have to wonder what the team is actually looking for this season. At best they’ll make the play-offs, but they’ll probably be eliminated without any real chance of winning. At worst, they’ll finish too high to get draft picks and too low to make the playoffs. This is basketball franchise hell. Kamilla Cardoso is the only player Sky retained in the draft. The rest of the list looks like randomly collected pieces and they hope it will work.

Since Toronto Tempo is in its first year, expectations are quite low.

Still, he has reason to believe success is possible. For example, the Golden State Valkyries made the postseason in their inaugural season last year. They have a solid backcourt in Brittney Sykes and Marina Mabrey. Both have traveled quite a bit around the league but they combine to average almost 40 points per game for the Tempo.

The rest of the cast is also fine. You won’t get overly excited about most of the cast, but there is some good talent in women like Nyara Sabally and even Kia Nurse. The team seems to be very inconsistent, which makes sense considering they’re built from discarded parts of other series.

In 10 games this season, they will either win or lose by 10+ points. The first two losses of the season were by 3 and 4 points respectively, but the last three were by 28, 19 and 15 points.

The Chicago Sky are not the type of team that will blow you away. They’re good, but not great. I don’t know if they need everything to go right to win the game, but they need Cardoso and Diggins to be heavily involved in the game to affect the win. Tempo can almost always count on Mabrey or Sykes to be their leading scorer. If both enter the game, they can compete with almost anyone.

Mabrey used to be at Sky and I’m not sure it was a very positive experience. He might hold a grudge against them and be ready to shake them tonight. I think Sky are better defensively and the rebounding advantage may be on their side.

However, I think Tempo, who has been rested since Wednesday, should have the offensive advantage and home field advantage. In a close situation like this, give me the Tempo to close the -1.5 lead.
