Ryder Cup: US captain Keegan Bradley wants ‘envelope rule’ changed after defeat by Europe

Bradley is uncomfortable with the rule because he entered 12 single at 11½-4½, his side needed as much points as possible to try and add a win. The score was 12-5 before a ball was shot.

On Sunday, a remarkable return saw that the US was strongly approaching Europe, but ultimately fell short and lost 15-13.

“He has to change, Brad Bradley said after the defeat.

“I have a few ideas, but I will not tell you right now. Open for everyone in the sports world, nothing against Viktor. But this rule needs to change by the next Ryder Cup.”

Europe’s two -point -winning margin means that they will still victorious, even if Hovland loses their match against English because it will win a single -point swing in the USA.

Luke Donald from Europe said, “The rule is in force for a long time.” He said.

“We have contracts for some reason, for a reason, we have a reason for the situations that occur.

“I want to center Viktor; I would have an absolute belief in him to give a score. He wasn’t playing. Warned.”

The envelope rule was introduced when European players were allowed to enter the Biennial competition against the US in 1979.

“The US has previously used this with Steve Pate in 1991,” Donald added. “This was a tight Ryder Cup, 14½-13½ [win for the US at Kiawah Island].

“It happened in 1993; Sam Torrance could not play with a wounded toe. The US won it [at The Belfry]. “
