Every year at San Mames, the iconic home of the Athletic Club in Bilbao, local fans stop to appreciate and celebrate not only the players from their own club, but the loyalty that shares a unique value with the Basque team.
Famous only for its field players born and raised in the region, the Athletic Club launched the One-Club Award in 2015, honoring those who have dedicated their entire professional career to a single team.
“We wanted to create an award that would enable most kids growing up to dream of playing for one club,” explains Dan Parry, from the La Liga side’s communications department.
“On the other hand, we wanted to show that despite all the big money transfers in today’s football, there are top players around the world who want to become one-club players.
“This is an individual award, but it is also an award that celebrates the unity between the football team, the fans and the player.”
