Milquetoast is a word meaning timid or weak person ( Oxford’s definition, not ours). But it’s also a Brisbane wine bar inside a CBD garage opening on Elizabeth Street in 2024. Playing like the noise room of your adult dreams, owners George Curtis and James Horsfall fill the space with vintage wooden tables, leather and velvet chairs and bar stools.
The highlight here is wine. Horsfall has curated a 50-bottle list covering both Australian and international discounts and focusing on small producers, grower champagnes and limited allocations. There’s also a cocktail list focusing on high-end spirits and a martini menu showcasing a different distillery each month.
There is a bar and an open kitchen on one side of the venue. Head chef Oliver Chia oversees a menu here that celebrates and elevates classic British comfort food. Expect classics like deviled eggs, spice bag quail, and smoked eel (with salt and vinegar chips, of course).
What to order: Milquetoast’s chip butty ($16) pairs classic thick-cut Tip Top bread with a meticulously made potato slab.
