Truck carrying wedding guests struck on Indonesia highway, killing 13 people

The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon on the northern coastal highway near Kiajaran Kulon village in Indramayu regency, as the group was returning home after attending a wedding in the neighboring Parean village, local traffic police chief Undang Syarif Hidayat said.
He said the victims were traveling in a flatbed pickup truck, the vehicle slowed down and stopped near the median opening to make a U-turn on the highway, and was rear-ended by a flatbed truck traveling in the same direction.

“The collision pushed the pickup truck into the oncoming lane, where another truck hit it again,” Hidayat said. he said. “The powerful crash threw more than a dozen people from the pickup onto the highway.”
The five survivors were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious, police said. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
Fatal traffic accidents are common in Indonesia, where overloaded vehicles, inadequate road safety measures, and poor compliance with traffic rules often cause fatal accidents.
