Trump abruptly cancels plan to sign bipartisan bill aimed at lowering cost of housing | US politics

Donald Trump abruptly shelved plans to sign a broad bipartisan bill aimed at lowering the cost of housing on Wednesday, demanding Congress approve his controversial legislation to overhaul US election rules and regulations.

The president is pushing the U.S. Senate to pass the Save America Act, which would significantly change voting regulations by requiring proof of citizenship in voter registration and significantly reduce mail-in voting.

Trump said in a statement on social media: “Today’s Housing News Conference and Signings are canceled until we pass the urgently needed RESCUE ACT, which I consider a National Emergency.”

A day earlier, the House of Representatives approved a housing bill to reduce federal regulations, streamline environmental reviews, speed up the construction process and limit the influence of corporate landlords by limiting their ability to purchase single-family homes.

The legislation comes as Democrats and Republicans prepare for midterm elections in November, where concerns about affordability will loom large in the minds of voters who will decide control of Congress during the final two years of Trump’s term.

This marks one of the biggest efforts in decades to increase housing supply and lower prices. But on Wednesday morning, Trump claimed it was “insignificant.”
