Helicopter crashes into field in Doncaster

Police have confirmed a helicopter crashed into land in Doncaster.

Emergency services were called to Ings Lane in Bentley at around 10:15 GMT.

The plane had taken off from Retford Gamston Airport in Nottinghamshire shortly before it crashed.

There was no confirmation of any injuries and South Yorkshire Police said the road was closed.

A force spokesman said they were asking people to “avoid the area and plan an alternative route if possible”.

In a brief statement, Retford Gamston Airport said: “We can confirm that an aircraft based here and operated by a lessee has been involved in an incident.

“We have no further information at this time.”

Lee Needham, who lives in the area, said the accident scene was close to houses, train tracks, industrial units and electricity poles.

“Whoever was flying the helicopter probably saved a lot of lives,” he said.
