US approves USD 93 million defence deal to sell Javelin anti-tank missiles, precision artillery to India

The United States has approved the possible sale of the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank guided missile system and M982A1 Excalibur precision-guided artillery shells to India. The decision will strengthen New Delhi’s military capabilities.
The US State Department has authorized the sale of $93 million worth of military equipment, according to a notification sent by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA). An acquisition tour, 25 command launch units, 100 Javelin missiles, training tools, simulation tours, spare parts and full lifecycle support are all included in the purchase.
The package also includes up to 216 Excalibur bullets worth US$47.1 million. The sale will ensure replenishment of stocks as the Indian Army was using only small numbers of both systems.
DSCA claims that the proposed sale will expand the strategic partnership and enhance India’s capacity to address both current and future security challenges without disrupting the existing military balance in the region.
“The intended outcome is to increase India’s first-strike accuracy and ensure that the country is well-positioned against current and future threats. This sale will likewise not alter the fundamental military balance in the region,” the statement said.
