Trump-backed Clay Fuller wins Georgia 14th District special election

RINGGOLD, GA — Republican congressional candidate Clay Fuller has given House Speaker Mike Johnson some breathing room as the GOP clings to a razor-thin majority in Congress.

Fuller, who is backed by President Donald Trump, defeated Democrat Shawn Harris on Tuesday in a special election to fill the vacant U.S. House seat in Georgia’s deep-red 14th Congressional District, the Associated Press reported.

The seat was left vacant when MAGA firebrand Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene resigned in early January. Greene left Congress with a year left in her term after a bitter dispute with Trump.

The special election comes as Republicans cling to a razor-thin 218-214 majority in the House. The GOP has been under gun to ensure Democrats avoid a special-election upset in a district in northwestern Georgia that Trump trailed by a massive 37-point margin in his 2024 presidential victory.

“This is extremely important and we need reinforcements,” Fuller told Fox News Digital on the eve of the runoff elections.

Added Fuller, the local district attorney and a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard who has served in the Air Force since 2009: “I think voters in Georgia 14 understand that and are looking forward to sending the first MAGA America fighter jet to Capitol Hill to support this agenda.”

Asked if he was concerned that MAGA supporters would not turn out in what is expected to be a low-turnout election because the president is not on the ballot, Fuller said Trump voters will “go in through the window to make sure they have a representative up there that’s going to fight for them and fight for President Trump.”

Harris, a cattle rancher who served in the military for four decades and retired as a brigadier general, needed Republican support to pull off the upset.

“I’m a Democrat, but I’m not affiliated with the party,” Harris said in a conversation with Fox News Digital on Monday. Harris also argued: “My opponent, Clay, cannot say that. He actually sold his soul to President Trump.”

Harris narrowly surpassed Fuller in the election, which included 17 candidates, 12 of whom were Republicans. first round voting At the beginning of March. Since no candidate got over 50%, Harris and Fuller advanced to Tuesday’s runoff election.

The congressional seat, which stretches from the outer suburbs of Atlanta to the state’s northwestern borders with Alabama and Tennessee, was left vacant when Greene left Congress with a year remaining in her term.

While Greene remains popular among Republicans in the district, Fuller said the voters he spoke to on the campaign trail were “focused on the fights of the future, not anything that happened in the past.”

When asked if he had spoken to Greene, Fuller said, “The representative said he reached out to Greene, chatted with her and sought advice about the district, and I will keep those conversations confidential.”

Harris, who lost to Greene by nearly 29 points as a first-time candidate in the 2024 re-election, emphasized that she was “no longer running against Marjorie Taylor Greene” and that her name “carries more weight than any other name in this district.”
