The Kremlin announced early Monday that Putin had received the invitation, adding that it was currently “studying the details” and would seek clarity on “all the nuances” in communications with the US government.

A French official close to President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that France had also received an invitation but did not plan to attend the Peace Council “at this stage.”

The French official said that the issue raises questions especially about respect for the principles and structure of the United Nations.

When asked about the unlikely possibility of Macron attending the championship game, Trump lashed out at his French counterpart, threatening him with tariffs for refusing to accept the invitation.

“No one wants him because he will be leaving office very soon,” Trump said about Macron.

“I will put a 200% tax on their wine and champagne and she will join,” he added. “But he doesn’t have to participate.”
