‘Trump desperate for a foreign policy success,’ expert says on US President’s claim of ending India-Pak conflict

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump seems “desperate” to succeed in the foreign policies set by his administration, foreign policy expert Mahesh Sachdev said on Wednesday, adding that declining popularity and increasing domestic and international challenges have made the US President so helpless.

Speaking at the US President’s State of the Union address in Congress, Sachdev stated that Trump’s reiteration of his claim that he stopped the India-Pakistan conflict that emerged after the Pahalgam Terror attacks last year coincided with a period when President Trump’s popularity decreased sharply as the midterm elections in the US approached.

In his speech, Trump repeated his claim that he had “stopped eight wars” and deserved credit for stopping a potential conflict between India and Pakistan in May last year.

However, India has repeatedly denied the participation of any third party in the agreement to end hostilities with Pakistan, arguing that the request to end military operations came from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations.

“I think the context for these claims and denials is pretty clear. But the fact that this iteration is happening against the backdrop of President Trump’s declining popularity, which appears to be declining rapidly as the midterm elections approach, makes the President a little more desperate to claim rare and in-between foreign policy successes, despite his claims to the contrary,” the expert said. he said.

According to Sachdev, Trump’s efforts to end the Ukraine-Russia war have yielded no results, slowing down progress towards a permanent peace agreement in Gaza, and stalling negotiations with Iran have increased the US President’s troubles.
“All these things put together make him more desperate for foreign policy success,” Sachdev said. The expert stated that Trump’s speech came at a time when the US President’s political weight was increasing due to his absence from daily negotiations in Congress.

He noted that the context of the US President’s speech comes at a very “turbulent” time, pointing to the US Supreme Court’s recent decision invalidating Trump’s tariff strategy, rising geopolitical tensions and the upcoming midterm elections in November.
