Trump fires jobs data commissioner after dismal report

2 August 2025 13:20 | News

US President Donald Trump has shown that a report slowed down in July and that it was much weaker than previously reported in May and June.

In an article on the social media platform on Friday, Trump claimed that the figures were manipulated for political reasons, and said that Erika Mcentarfer, Director of the Office of the Office of the Working Statistics, assigned by former President Joe Biden, should be expelled.

He did not offer any evidence for the accusation.

Im I directed my team to ignite this political assignment immediately, Tr Trump said in the real Social.

“It will be replaced by someone more competent and qualified.”

After his post, Lori Chavez-Deremer X said that Mcentarfer no longer leads the office and would serve as the acting director of the deputy commissioner William Wiatrowski.

Chavez-Deramer, “I support the president’s decision to replace Biden’s commissioner and to ensure that the American people can rely on important and effective data from BLS,” Chavez-Deramer said.

The job report on Friday showed that only 73,000 jobs were added in July and that 258,000 less work was created in May and June.

Mcentarfer was nominated by Biden in 2023 and in January 2024, he became the Commissioner for Statistics. Commissioners typically serve for four years, but political appointments can be made. The commissioner is the only political appointment of the agency, which has hundreds of career officers.

Trump focused most of his anger on revisions for the agency’s previous recruitment data. In May, business gains were revised from 125,000 to 19,000 and fell from 147,000 to 14,000 in June. Only 73,000 positions were added in July. Unemployment rate rose from 4.1 percent to 4.2 percent.

“Can’t anyone be so wrong? We need the right job numbers, Tr Trump wrote.

“It will be changed with someone more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this should be fair and correct, they cannot be manipulated for political purposes.”

The monthly employment report is one of the most closely monitoring of government economic data and can cause sharp release in financial markets. The disappointing figure sent us its market indices about 1.5 percent lower on Friday.

Although the number of jobs is usually the subject of political spin, economists and the Wall Street investors – millions of dollars in danger – have always accepted the economic data of the US government to be free of political manipulation.
