Trump Freedom 250 sponsors include companies with federal business

WASHINGTON – This week on the National Mall, Freedom 250 signs directed visitors to temporary government pavilions, a Ferris wheel, and moving, temporary history exhibits. Sponsor names appeared on the side Embers-aligned programming. Some states were represented by official delegations. Others had given up on this choice, leaving spare displays or dismantled stands in their place.

As the country prepares to celebrate its sesquicentennial, its 250th birthday, the most flamboyant celebrations in Washington are being driven by corporate money.

CNBC analysis finds 14 companies supporting both America250Freedom 250, the nonprofit organization that supports the Congress-created U.S. Quasi-Fiveth Anniversary Commission and the Trump-backed public-private partnership behind some of the administration’s most visible anniversary events.

Companies listed online that support both include: Boeing’sDeloitte, Exiger, John Deere, LockheedMartin, Northrop Grumman, Seer, palantirPhorm Energy, RTX of SAP, Scott’s Miracle-GroUFC and United Airlines.

Of these companies, only John Deere responded to CNBC’s request for comment, but did not respond to specific questions about its sponsorship of either organization. John Deere said it was eager to celebrate people whose work helps the United States “build, nurture and sustain power”

Many of these companies have major dealings with the federal government, including defense contracts, technology contracts, regulatory interests, merger matters, tax issues and other policy issues shaped by the Trump administration.

CNBC found no evidence of a connection between Freedom 250 sponsorships and the companies’ relationships with management.

But this is yet another example of the complex intersection of corporate America and politics under a president who has become increasingly close to corporations.

Observers and ethics experts say this structure gives companies that have business before the administration a new way to access the President Donald Trumpmost of the money was hidden from public view.

“The concern is not that corporations are sponsoring a national celebration. The issue is that this celebration provides access to the president when some of these companies had businesses before his administration,” said Bruce Freed, president and co-founder of the Center for Political Accountability, which advises companies on political spending.

Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee released a statement report This week he criticized the president and Freedom 250, accusing them of diverting funds and misleading sponsors.

Freedom 250 fundraising materialsFirst reported The New York Times described tiered sponsorship as follows: Donors who gave at least $500,000 were offered VIP access, invitations and preferred seating at events, according to the New York Times. The $1 million contribution came with an invitation and photo opportunity to a special “thank you” reception hosted by Trump, and donors who gave $2.5 million or more were offered a speaking role at a July 4 event in Washington, the Times reported.

For $10 million or more, the companies got VIP access to all Freedom 250 events, logo rights, exclusive press releases, a July 4th speech and a private reception with the opportunity to take photos hosted by Trump, according to the Times report.

These types of tiered benefits are common in large event sponsorships. Watchdogs said Freedom 250 is different because some sponsors did business before the administration, its donor structure is not transparent and perks are tied to events built around Trump.

“For a million dollars, you get a meet and greet with the president, and what we see is that when you get in the same room with Donald Trump, it’s very beneficial for your business,” Matt Dallek, a political historian at George Washington University, told CNBC.

Freedom 250, America250 and the White House did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

double celebrations

Two separate groups are planning to celebrate the big 4th of July holiday.

The first of these, America250, grew out of a bipartisan commission that Congress created in 2016 to plan the nation’s 250th anniversary. His studies intensified civilian programmingincluding student competitions, volunteer initiatives and events across the country.

Freedom 250 emerged after Trump returned to office and sought to put his own stamp on the anniversary. When Trump announced this effort social media In December, he promised “the most amazing birthday party you’ve ever seen.”

Freedom 250 and associated events have become the vehicle for some of Trump’s most prominent anniversary events: the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, a planned arch model overlooking Washington, an IndyCar race in the capital, a UFC fight at the White House and more.

Congress appropriated $150 million for the anniversary, but America250 had received only $25 million as of early June, according to a report obtained by Washington, D.C.-based digital news outlet America250. NOTES. According to NOTUS’ initial reporting, Trump-aligned efforts have achieved much more: nearly $80 million in 250th-related grants to the National Park Foundation.

Freed and other experts said one possible explanation for why companies would support both groups is that America250 offers traditional patriotic branding, while Freedom 250 moves sponsors closer to Trump’s preferred version of the celebration.

“If you’re a company with federal contracts, regulatory issues, or merger interests, being in the president’s office can be much more valuable than the sponsorship itself,” Freed told CNBC.

The UFC may be the clearest example of how Freedom 250 blurs corporate money, Trump’s personal network and policy interests.

The company helped organize the Freedom 250 mixed martial arts event at the White House over Trump’s birthday weekend. UFC President Dana White, a longtime Trump ally, also sent a letter to Trump on May 11 asking him to reverse a provision in the “Big Beautiful Bill” that capped gambling loss deductions at 90%. ESPN reported. That provision is still in effect.

UFC declined to comment on its listing on the Freedom 250 and America250 sites. CNBC found no evidence that the UFC’s corporate sponsorship influenced the government’s decisions.

business logic

Institutional money has long been national anniversaries.

The Bicentennial celebration in 1976 received so much corporate sponsorship that critics mocked it. “centennial acquisition.” Former President Richard Nixon was also accused of trying to direct the commemoration through the executive branch in preparation for the celebrations before resigning in 1974.

High-profile bicentennial project, American Freedom Train financed by five companies – Pepsi-ColaAtlantic Richfield, General Engines, Cautious Kraft Foods each contributed about $5 million in initial grants to the project, according to Ford Library records. Adjusted for inflation, this would be worth about $20 million.

But historians and observers said Freedom 250 raised mixed concerns because of its outreach-style sponsorships, opaque funding structure and the degree to which the anniversary was built around Trump.

“For everyone else there’s America250, and then there’s this little shadowy organization [Freedom 250] Dallek said he was basically doing things for Trump rallies and Trump supporters. The structure “doesn’t contribute much to the idea of unity,” Dallek added.

America250 publicly lists dozens of sponsors. Freedom 250 referred to some of its supporters as “strategic partners.” And the head of the National Park Foundation told Congress that donors who wish to remain anonymous will not be disclosed. Congressional Democrats.

That transparency is another part of the appeal, corporate political consultants said.

“Companies are hedged,” Freed said. “They want safe patriotic branding of America250, but they also don’t want to take part in the president’s preferred celebration.”

Blurred lines extend beyond corporate sponsorship.

A department-wide NASA email in June encouraged employees to shop at the Freedom 250 store, according to NASA employee resources and materials reviewed by CNBC. According to these materials, the link leads to the Trump campaign website.
