Trump honours Kirk with Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Donald Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor, to activist Charlie Kirk, who was a leading voice in the conservative movement before he was assassinated last month.

“We are here today to honor and remember a fearless fighter for freedom, a beloved leader who galvanized the next generation like we’ve never seen before,” Trump said at the Rose Garden event. he said.

Turning Point USA founder Kirk was shot while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on September 10; This murder shocked America and reignited debates about political violence.

Kirk’s assassination became a rallying point for the Republican president, who used it to mobilize his base and pressure the state to take sweeping measures against what he called “radical left extremism.”

Trump said of Kirk’s killing: “He was assassinated in the prime of his life because he courageously spoke the truth, lived his faith, and fought relentlessly for a better, stronger America.”

The Trump administration has launched a broad crackdown on left-wing organizations, deploying multiple federal agencies, including the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and IRS, to investigate and disrupt groups accused of financing and organizing political violence.

Trump also downplayed violence from right-wing groups and insisted that political violence was primarily a problem originating from the left. Experts say political violence is bipartisan, with historically more attacks inspired by right-wing ideology.

Authorities found no evidence that the suspect in Kirk’s shooting was acting with any group.

The ceremony was attended by prominent Republican politicians, members of the media and Trump allies, including Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. Senators Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Rick Scott, as well as House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Kirk, one of the important names in conservative politics, mobilized young voters for Trump’s 2024 campaign. Its impact was significant but divisive; It has been marked by attacks on LGBTQ+ rights and civil rights. While supporters hail him as a defender of free speech, critics claim he facilitates mainstream extremist views.

Trump signed a proclamation Tuesday declaring October 14, 2025, Kirk’s 32nd birthday, as National Charlie Kirk Day of Remembrance.
