Donald Trump insisted on Tuesday that the war in Iran has widespread support among Americans, a view he said was strengthened by the revelation that a major US city is threatened by Iran’s nuclear weapons development program.

Since American and Israeli bombs hit Tehran in February, the president’s approval ratings have plummeted while oil prices have soared across the country.

Speaking to reporters at the White House ballroom construction site on Tuesday, Trump acknowledged some negative feelings about the conflict, which is approaching its third month.

“Everybody tells me it’s unpopular, but I think it’s very popular,” Trump said. “When they hear that this is about nuclear weapons that can destroy Los Angeles, that can wipe out major cities quickly – I’ll tell you what when we explain this to people – I don’t have enough time to explain this to people. I’m too busy doing this.”

But a new New York Times and Sienna poll released Monday joins a series of polls showing the Iran war is unpopular with the public.

Pollsters asked whether Trump’s decision to go to war with Iran was right or wrong. An overwhelming majority (64% of respondents) said it was the wrong decision. Only 30 percent supported the president.

The conflict and rising oil prices are driving down Trump’s approval ratings, as other polls have shown, potentially endangering Republicans voting ahead of the midterm elections.

“As both parties mobilize for expensive and tough midterm contests, the poll shows Republican candidates entering general election races with solid political commitments,” New York Times pollsters wrote. he said.

These policies also affect his overall approval rating; The Times poll recorded a new record low of just 37% in his second term. The survey was conducted among 1,507 registered voters between May 11 and 15.

But despite growing disapproval of Trump’s foreign policy, he reaffirmed his stance on the Iran conflict while answering reporters’ questions on Tuesday.

Trump said, “Frankly, I think it’s very popular. But whether it’s popular or not, I have to do this because I’m not going to let the world blow up on my watch. It’s not going to happen.”

The president answered the questions in front of another priority that has undermined his popularity: the White House ballroom, which has become controversial since Trump announced the project in October.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll released earlier this month found that Americans are as opposed to the ballroom proposal as they were last fall.

The poll showed they rejected the East Wing demolition and ballroom project by 56% to 28%; this rate was the same as when the survey was conducted in October.
