President Donald Trump has said he wants to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and said it would be an “honor” to do so to help other countries that rely on the vital Middle Eastern waterway.

While speaking to reporters in Florida on Monday, Trump fielded questions about the global energy choke point that has been disrupted by mutual attacks between Iran, Israel and the United States.

The Strait of Hormuz, about 35 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, lies between Iran and Oman and carries about a fifth of global liquefied natural gas at around 20 million barrels per day; This makes it a prime target when conflict breaks out in the region.

“We’re really helping China and other countries here because they get most of their energy from the Straits,” Trump said. “We have a good relationship with China. It’s an honor to do this.”

Trump is scheduled to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping later this month. While Trump was touting the US’s new energy partnership with Venezuela, he noted that China was taking its oil from the strait.

“So we’re doing this for other parts of the world, including countries like China,” he said. “They get most of their oil from the straits.”

“We have very good relations with President XI (Jinping) and China,” he added. “I’ll be going there shortly and we’re protecting the world from what these madmen are trying to do, and very successfully I might add.”

Trump later reaffirmed his stance on the strait in a fiery Truth Social post.

“If Iran does anything to stop the flow of Oil through the Strait of Hormuz, it will be hit TWENTY TIMES HARDER than it has ever been hit by the United States. We will also eliminate easily destructible targets that will make rebuilding Iran as a Nation nearly impossible – Death, Fire and Fury will reign over them – But I hope and pray that this will not happen!” he wrote.
