India coach strongly backs Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli before Ranchi ODI, reveals toughest battles

Morne Morkel backed the RO-KO duo ahead of India’s upcoming ODI in Ranchi and said that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli can easily play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Morkel added that he spent “sleepless nights” bowling with the iconic pair and praised their longevity, fitness and class.
India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel is confident that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli still have a lot to contribute in international cricket and can qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup provided they stay mentally and physically fit. Ahead of the first ODI against South Africa, where both experienced players will return, Morkel praised their commitment and vast experience in the sport.

Morkel noted that while the next World Cup is still some time away, both senior batsmen have the talent to continue their careers if they are willing to put in the necessary effort.
“There’s still a long way to go… They’re quality players. As long as they’re happy to work hard and stay fit, of course,” he said.
Sharing his perspective, Morkel said: “They can definitely play in the 2027 World Cup if they feel mentally and physically capable. They have won championships and understand how to perform in big tournaments.” This came in response to a question about the desire to see Rohit and Kohli in the upcoming World Cup.
The former South African fast bowler, who joined India’s coaching staff last August, emphasized that experience is an invaluable asset that teams find difficult to replace. “I’ve always believed in experience and having that experience, you can’t find that anywhere. They’ve won trophies, they know how to play in big tournaments. So definitely the World Cup.”
Reflecting on his own experiences in cricket, Morkel expressed his understanding of the challenges involved in bowling to Rohit and Kohli. “I have faced them in so many matches. There have been nights when I couldn’t sleep thinking about bowling to them… So from my perspective, I definitely support it (Kohli and Rohit qualifying for the World Cup).”
India will continue the ODI series without their regular skipper Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test in Kolkata. He was hospitalized and was excluded from both the second Test and ODI series despite showing signs of recovery. In his absence, KL Rahul will take over as captain.
Also, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer will not be able to play due to the spleen injury he suffered while trying to catch the ball during the Australia series. He was hospitalized in Sydney and began his journey to recovery.
