President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Monday: Microsoft The company will unveil changes that will ensure Americans don’t face rising utility bills as it builds more data centers to meet growing demand for artificial intelligence.
“I never want Americans to pay higher Electric bills because of Data Centers,” Trump said. Real Social. “That’s why my Administration is working with major American Technology Companies to ensure their commitment to the American People, and we will have much to announce in the coming weeks.”
Ahead of this year’s midterm elections, President Trump is trying to find ways to lower prices for consumers as the effects of tariffs he imposed on goods imported into the United States last year ripple through the economy. In December, Trump announced a “warrior dividend” of $1,776 for U.S. troops. Earlier this month, he called for $200 billion in mortgage bonds to be purchased in hopes of lowering mortgage rates.
Meanwhile, the biggest tech companies are rapidly building power-hungry data centers and telling Wall Street they will increase capital spending as the AI boom continues. Last week, Meta announced a deal with three nuclear power companies for a data center in Ohio.
Trump congratulated Microsoft for its efforts to keep prices under control and suggested other companies would make similar commitments.
“First, Microsoft, where my team works, will be making major changes starting this week to ensure Americans don’t ‘pick up’ their POWER consumption by paying higher utility bills,” Trump wrote on Monday.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Utilities charged U.S. consumers 6% more for electricity in August than a year earlier, including in states where many data centers are located, CNBC reported in November.
Microsoft pays close attention to the impact its data centers have on residents.
“I just want you to know that we’re doing everything we can, and I believe we’ve managed to manage this issue well, so that you all don’t have to pay more for electricity because of our presence,” Brad Smith, the company’s president and vice president, said at a September town hall meeting in Wisconsin, where Microsoft is building an AI data center.
While Microsoft is making progress on some facilities, the company withdrew plans for a data center in Caledonia, Wisconsin, amid vocal opposition to efforts there. The project would be located 20 miles from a data center in the village of Mount Pleasant.
