President Donald Trump attacked Democrats on Saturday over the ongoing government shutdown and said he was directing Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to ensure military service members are paid next week.
“‘It gets better every day,’ Chuck Schumer said recently during the Shutdown of the Radical Left,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I DISAGREE! If nothing is done because of ‘Leader’ Chuck Schumer and the Democrats, our Brave Troops will miss out on the paychecks they deserve on October 15th.”
He said he instructed Hegseth to “use all available funds to PAY our Troops on October 15th. We have identified the funds necessary to do this and Secretary Hegseth will use them to PAY OUR TROOPS.”
“I will not allow Democrats to hold our Military and our Nation’s Security HOSTAGE with dangerous Government Shutdowns,” he added. “Radical Left Democrats MUST OPEN UP THE GOVERNMENT, then we can work together on Healthcare and many other things they want to destroy. Thank you for your interest in this issue!”

The government shut down on October 1 after Democrats and Republicans failed to pass a spending bill that would fund the government. Democrats worried that Affordable Care Act tax cuts could raise premiums when they expire and that Medicaid cuts could leave people without insurance.
Trump on Monday blamed Democratic lawmakers for the shutdown and said he would be “happy to work with Democrats on failed health policies” when the government reopens.
“Democrats SHUT DOWN the US government right in the middle of one of the most successful economies our country has ever had, including a record stock market,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This has unfortunately impacted many programs, services and other elements of society that Americans rely on, and this should not have happened.”
“I’m happy to work with Democrats on failing health policies or anything else, but they need to let our government reopen first,” he added.

“It gets better every day for us,” Schumer recently told Punchbowl News about the Democrats’ shutdown strategy.
He added: “Because we thought about it well in advance and knew that our focus on September 30th would be health care, and we prepared for that… Their whole theory was to threaten us, to deceive us, and that we would surrender in a day or two.”
Republicans blamed Schumer, saying the shutdown was meant to appease the progressive wing of the Democratic Party; While Zohran Mamdani maintains her lead in the New York City mayoral race, rumors are swirling that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) could potentially challenge Schumer in the next primary. He has not formally announced his candidacy for the Senate.

Schumer recently shared his remarks on the Senate floor with Fox News Digital.
“Every day that Republicans refuse to negotiate to end this shutdown, it gets worse for Americans and it becomes clearer who’s fighting for them. Our case to fix healthcare and end this shutdown gets better, better, stronger every day because families open their letters showing how much their premiums will go up if Republicans get their way. They see why this fight matters; it’s their health care, it’s their bank accounts.” and it’s about protecting their future.”
