President Trump on Saturday highlighted a federal law that gives the president broad authority to restrict immigration, just days after unveiling a sweeping new immigration agenda.

In his Truth Social post, Trump highlighted Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows the president to “suspend the entry” of non-U.S. citizens deemed “detrimental” to the national interest.

Citing the law, Trump wrote: “If the President determines that the entry of any alien or any class of aliens into the United States would be prejudicial to the interests of the United States, he may, by proclamation and for such period as he deems necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens, whether immigrants or non-immigrants, or impose such other restrictions on the entry of aliens as he may deem appropriate.”

On Friday, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced it was pausing all asylum decisions.
