Trump rebuked: US House votes for bill to end Iran war

The Republican-led US House of Representatives passed a resolution blocking President Donald Trump from continuing the war against Iran; This reflects growing concern among party members about the three-month-old conflict.

On Wednesday, the House voted 215 to 208, with four Republicans joining Democrats in voting in favor of the war powers resolution. This was Trump’s latest defeat in Congress, despite his party’s narrow majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The vote is largely symbolic. For any resolution to take effect, it must pass the Senate and require a two-thirds majority in both chambers to overcome Trump’s almost certain veto.

But the vote reflects unease among some Republicans with Trump’s handling of the conflict and marks a rare bipartisan effort to restrict the president’s war powers.

The war has entered its fourth month with no end in sight, after three previous war powers resolutions failed by increasingly slim margins in the House.

The Senate advanced a separate but similar resolution in a procedural vote in May after seven previous attempts failed. The four House Republicans who voted for the war powers resolution were Reps. Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Thomas Massie of Kentucky.

Although seven House members did not vote, no Democrats voted against it.

Trump has faced some opposition in Congress lately, after months in which few Republicans opposed any of his policy initiatives.
