Trump reveals long-awaited pick for top Australia post

28 April 2026 08:46 | News

US President Donald Trump has announced that America will choose its next ambassador to Australia, more than a year after the Republican leader returned to the White House.

Former Virginia congressman David Brat has been nominated for the ambassador post that has been vacant since 2024.

Mr. Brat represented Virginia’s seventh congressional district in the U.S. Republican House of Representatives.

He was first elected in 2014 and served two terms before losing his seat in 2018.

The ambassador position has not yet been finalized as the appointment must be confirmed by the US Senate.

If successful in his election, Mr Brat will replace Caroline Kennedy as ambassador to Australia.

Ms. Kennedy, the only surviving child of former Democratic president John F. Kennedy, was appointed to the Biden administration.
