President Donald Trump said Monday that any country doing business with Iran would face a 25 percent tariff on “all business done with the United States.”
The new tariffs on imports from Iran’s trading partners “will go into effect immediately,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
“This Order is final and conclusive. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he wrote.
Further details about the tariff announcement were not immediately available. The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for additional information.
Trump’s apparent effort to isolate Iran economically comes as the oil-rich Middle Eastern country struggles to quell ongoing mass anti-government protests.
Dozens of these protesters have reportedly been killed in recent weeks; Trump threatened to take military action against Iran if these killings continue.
The president has also openly encouraged demonstrations against the Iranian regime. “Iran is looking at FREEDOM perhaps like never before. USA is ready to help!!!” he wrote on social media on Saturday.
