Honolulu emergency director concerned about single-walled homes as Kiko approaches

Honolulu (KHON2) – Authorities hope that Kiko’s runway will lead to weakening and return to the north, but with uncertainty, they are still preparing for the worst.

Randal Collins, Director of Honolulu’s Emergency Management Agency, says that one of the biggest concerns when it comes to hurricanes is the prevalence of single -walled houses, especially vulnerable to strong winds and rain.

Hurricane Kiko is waiting to lose his hurricane status as he approaches the islands

“Settlement areas, mostly areas in single -walled houses, Coll said Collins. “We are also worried about low areas because of the internal floods that we can take from the effects of the coastal floods and hurricane.”

This weekend focused on bringing the Emergency Operations Center team together.

Collins, “Eh, especially by accelerating our emergency operation center and national weather service, Hiema and Obviously we provide coordination with our local partners. And we are trying to understand what each other is responsible. We are going over our plans,” he said. “And then we make some improvements based on our lessons from Tsunami a few weeks ago. Therefore, we make some changes based on the courses learned, since we realize some limitations of our emergency operation center and technology.”

When it comes to what people should do at home, Collins says he wants them to spare a minute to prepare.

“The risk factor is a little higher today and this weekend. And that’s why we want people to bring their 14 -day materials together,” he said.

Materials include food, water, important documents and more. It is best to be too careful and make sure you bring loose items that may be outside.
