Trump says he may ‘temporarily’ drop bid to make Blanche attorney general | Trump administration
Donald Trump has threatened to “temporarily” shelve his bid to permanently appoint his former personal lawyer Todd Blanche as US attorney general amid resistance in the US Congress.
Blanche, who currently serves as acting attorney general, is trying to persuade a handful of Republican senators to support her candidacy for the post.
Her hopes appeared to have faded Wednesday when a key Republican senator, John Cornyn of Texas, told reporters he would not support Blanche’s nomination without written confirmation that a previously planned $1.8 billion slush fund for the president’s allies was dead.
Blanche needs the vote of every Republican on the Senate judiciary committee, including Cornyn, to advance her nomination to take on the role permanently.
Writing on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump said: “Todd Blanche is a STAR and everyone knows it! He has the potential to be one of the Greatest Attorneys General of All Time.”
“But John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, both of whom I refused to endorse and whose political careers ended because of my action, refuse to vote for this Major Candidate, who will remain a Trustee anyway.
“If they don’t do the right thing, I have no objection to temporarily withdrawing Todd’s name and putting it back after Cornyn and Tillis are removed from office,” Trump said.
