Trump says King Charles ‘agrees’ that Iran should never have a nuclear weapon in shock moment at state dinner

President Donald Trump blasted World War III last night by revealing the monarch’s private views on Iran and nuclear weapons in a shock moment at a glamorous White House state dinner. He risked embarrassing Charles.

Amid the floral elegance of the East Room, which was transformed into a lush English garden for the glittering event, Trump delivered a stirring and highly complimentary speech celebrating the enduring alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom.

But the tone briefly changed as the President began drifting off course and into rising tensions in the Middle East.

‘We are currently doing a small study in the Middle East. And we’re doing very well,’ he said, adding: ‘We will never allow this rival to have nuclear weapons… Charles agrees with me, even more than I do… We will never allow this rival to have nuclear weapons.’

These words, which suggested that the King privately shared Trump’s harsh attitude towards Iran, were met with applause in the hall. There was no immediate reaction from Buckingham Palace.

The moment was in stark contrast to the otherwise warm and joyful evening, where both leaders praised the historic ‘special relationship’ and made sharp-witted jokes.

At one point the King drew laughter from the A-list guests by saying that without Britain Americans would ‘speak French’ – a reference to the Seven Years’ War.

Amid the floral elegance of the White House East Room, transformed into a lush English garden, the evening’s diplomatic focus shifted sharply to global security.

The joke reflected Trump’s frequent claim that Europe would have spoken German had it not been for American intervention in World War II.

In her speech at a glittering black tie state dinner at the White House, Her Majesty told President Trump and the 120 guests present: ‘We are here tonight to renew an indispensable alliance that has long been the cornerstone of prosperity and security for both British and American citizens.

We traded, innovated, and created together across the ocean and from coast to coast. “We stood side by side in the best of times and the worst,” he said.

The monarch observed that we currently face challenges from around the world and that ‘these challenges encourage us to reaffirm tonight the foundation on which our partnership is built’.

He touched on the many ways this can be done, such as through defense partnerships.

He also presented the US leader with an extraordinary personal gift from the King to the President as a symbol of friendship: the original bell from the Conning Tower of HMS Trump, a Royal Navy submarine that fought in the Pacific Rim in World War II.

This is reminiscent of Queen Elizabeth’s gift of the Liberty Bell for the bicentennial during her visit to the United States in 1976.

He told Mr Trump at the dinner that it was a sign of “our shared history and bright future” and joked that “if you want to reach us… give us a call.”

The themes of the speech were similar to his previous speech to Congress but with a less formal and more personal tone.

His Majesty again addressed the security incident on Saturday, saluting both the actions of the security services to prevent further injuries and the President’s ‘unwavering determination to continue’.

He added that the US character throughout history has been defined by ‘courage, perseverance and the spirit of adventure’, citing the many meetings between Presidents and British monarchs over the decades.

His final toast saw him humorously thanking the President for a wonderful dinner that was ‘a remarkable improvement over the Boston Tea Party’.

“In fact, you recently said, Mr. President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German,” the King said, referring to one of the President’s oft-quoted views on 20th-century history.

Pausing for a moment as an expectant laugh wandered around the East Room, the King continued with a playful grin: ‘I confess that if it weren’t for us, you’d be speaking French.’

This joke, a reference to the 18th-century struggles for North America and the dominance of the English language in the colonies, caused great laughter among the assembled guests, including the President himself.
