Trump slams energy deal between California and Britain, Politico reports

February 16 – President Donald Trump condemned the clean energy agreement between the United Kingdom and California Governor Gavin Newsom hours after it was signed on Monday, Politico reports.
In an interview with the media, Trump said it was “inappropriate” for England to meet with the Democratic governor. Republican Trump also branded Newsom a “loser” and said his “state is going to hell and his environmental work is a disaster.”
Newsom is an outspoken Trump critic and is publicly considering seeking the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
The energy deal Newsom signed with British Energy Secretary Ed Miliband on Monday promises cooperation on clean energy technologies such as offshore wind and aims to expand British firms’ access to the California market.
“Donald Trump is knee-deep in coal and Big Oil, selling America’s future to China,” a Newsom spokesperson said in an email. “Governor Newsom will continue to lead in his absence. Foreign leaders reject Trump and choose California’s vision for the future.”
Trump recently invited the oil and gas industry to nominate fields in Southern and Central California for potential offshore oil and gas lease sales as soon as next year; It was a move that Newsom and environmental groups condemned as a threat to the state’s ecosystems.
In January, Newsom was prevented from speaking in the US official hall at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and the White House was responsible for this.
