U.S. officials told the media that the Trump administration was considering plans to seize Iran’s oil export hub on Kharg Island, even as President Donald Trump publicly talked about “ending” the conflict.
A ground operation to capture the tiny island responsible for nearly all of Iran’s oil exports could be used as leverage to pressure the regime to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping channel in the Gulf.
But experts warn that the move could also prolong the Iran war and put American soldiers more directly in the line of fire.
“He wants Hormuz opened,” a senior White House official said axios. “If he has to take Kharg Island to make that happen, that will happen. If he decides on a coastal invasion, that will happen. But that decision hasn’t been made yet.”
