Trump tells Canada to be ‘grateful’ for US Golden Dome defense system

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States should control Greenland to build a large-scale “Golden Dome” missile defense system that he claimed would also protect Canada, arguing that the country is committed to U.S. security.
Speaking to participants at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump said, “We are building a Golden Dome that will inherently defend Canada. Meanwhile, Canada gets a lot of free gifts from us. They should be grateful, too.” he said.
Referring to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s speech on Tuesday, he said, “But they are not. I watched your prime minister yesterday. He was not that grateful. They should be grateful to us, to Canada. Canada is alive thanks to the USA. Next time you make a statement, do not forget Mark.”

It remains unclear whether Canada will take part in building Golden Dome, an ambitious missile defense system unveiled by the White House in May, but Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday that the Trump administration has invited Ottawa to participate.

Carney, in his speech He did not mention Trump by name in his speech to the World Economic Forum but warned that the rules-based international order was collapsing as the “major powers” increasingly used their economic and security leverage to pressure their allies.

He argued that “middle powers” such as Canada should heed the “wake-up call” that harmony does not guarantee security and instead build power through diversity, collective action and respect for sovereignty.
Carney also reaffirmed Canada’s support for Greenland and Denmark’s right to determine Greenland’s future, signaling his opposition to territorial or economic pressure tied to security demands.
